Mumbai
The Juma Masjid, designated as a Grade I heritage structure and situated at Crawford Market in Mumbai, was the site of a sensitive architectural intervention intended to create a dedicated prayer space for women. The design adheres closely to the stylistic vocabulary of the original mosque. The newly introduced structure is modest in scale, featuring an arched roof constructed from polycarbonate sheeting supported by a mild steel (MS) frame. The external walls comprise aluminum fins, which enable natural ventilation throughout the space, and are further enhanced by stained glass panels set within intricately carved trifoliate timber frames. These are surmounted by timber panels adorned with the traditional chand motif, reinforcing the cultural and architectural continuity of the site. The flooring is finished in Kota stone, and the ablution (wazu) area is equipped with marble seating for ritual washing. The mihrab is prominently articulated with stained glass incorporating the chand motif, framed by a tri-arched timber structure that draws focus and reverence to the prayer niche.
